Can Fiorina and Whitman save California?
Carly Fiorina declared her candidacy for the U.S. Senate–in a bid to replace another well-known woman, incumbent California Democrat Barbara Boxer.
Fiorina, who was No. 1 on Fortune’s Most Powerful Women list for six years when she was CEO of Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), will be pounding the campaign trail simultaneously with another ex-No. 1 on our list: Meg Whitman. The former eBay (EBAY) CEO, who topped Fortune’s power list in 2004 and ‘05, is running for Governor.
Neither woman, both Republicans, will have an easy time in the left-leaning, financially crippled Golden State. Running on her “I’m a great manager” platform, Whitman has a decent shot at her party’s nomination. But she faces a fierce Democratic rival in Jerry Brown, California’s current Attorney General who once was Governor. Another Democratic rival, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, just dropped out. (For more, check out my recent cover story, “Can Meg Whitman Save California?“)
Fiorina, who yesterday revealed her plans in the Orange County Register, has a personality tailor-made for campaigning: She’s charismatic and commanding. Remember when she was waging that brutal proxy fight to buy Compaq in 2002? She played it like a political candidate–and she won.
But Fiorina, 55, who worked with Whitman on John McCain’s failed Presidential campaign, carries significant baggage into this latest race: She was fired by the H-P board in 2005–as much for her style of leadership as her disappointing execution.
Another battle lately has been a medical one. Fiorina was recently treated for breast cancer. In September, while undergoing daily treatments at Stanford Hospital, she spoke by video-conference, along with Elizabeth Edwards, to participants of the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit. Here’s a clip:
Kudos to Fiorina for speaking out. The fact that she’s running for the U.S. Senate is a sign that her prognosis is good. And she’s as tenacious as ever.
You say Carly is charismatic? You are joking right? She is far from being charismatic as she raises the hair on the back of the neck for most people every time she speaks – she is both arrogant and condescending. Further, she was a horrible manager and leader in her failed tenure at HP. So we would want her representing us in government because…?
Carly Carly Carly….walks away with $41 million and still can’t find a job. And now she wants to be a statesman. The cancer did even give her a hint. When her mouth moves, she is lying. That is all. She is an amoral person. Bottom line.
Remember when Carley said that neither Obama or McCain were smart enough to run a major corporation? That kind of ego is enough to make her unpredictable and unsuitable for any public or private job.
Fiorina was a disaster for HP and will likely be a disaster for California. She did not even vote for much of her adult life so how much does she actually care about the process?
The problem with people like her and Meg Whitman is they think government runs like a business. That is a fantastically naive assessment.
Why the fascination and pervasiveness of cult-of-personality – that it takes some special person to save the day, like some banana republic messiah. It is everyday people who will save California (and the US and themselves), if allowed to do so. The best a politician can do is inspire and help get government out of the way and off the backs of the doers. These are no mean feats, and they do require special people, the last of which was Reagan.
Yes, Remember that comment, “Jobs aren’t Americans’ god-given right.”
She’s running as a politician in the wrong state & in the wrong country. She should be in either China or India kissing their behinds.
As other people have commented, I agree, she’s only in it for herself.
I worked at HP through the Fiorina years and watched her destroy the “HP Way” that Dave & Bill worked so hard to build. It was a shame how quickly she snuffed the passion and innovation …. worker morale dropped along with the stock. I can only imagine what would happen if she entered politics.
Carly Fiorina has plenty of ideas on how to save California, just like she saved HP. She will outsource the California Government by sending the jobs overseas, take away every benefit from each and every family (except hers and her friends), put a marketing spin on it, then when it fails, she will blame everyone else.
Fiorina’s tenure at HP and Lucent was catastrophic. She made big promises that were impossible to keep and introduced a culture of entitlement and fear in a firm renowned for its open minded approach. Her merger with Compaq was simply a way to get around the increasing resistance at all levels to her less than ethical methods and reckless decisions. All flash but no substance. California beware!
Carly is only for herself. She made a statement while at HP that is was not an americans god given right to have a job when she was sending everything overseas. Watch out California, maybe she will outsource your state.
Soon after Fiorina became HP CEO she told a company interviewer that she believed in improvisation more than in long-range plans and goals. That sure worked out well, didn’t it. Maybe she’ll propose saving California by merging it with Oregon.
Fiorina is a walking, talking time bomb. Get her off script and she’s a disaster.
Glad she has apparently recovered from her breast cancer.

Does anyone remember when she was CEO for HP trying to justify sending jobs overseas by saying “There is no job that is America’s God-given right anymore,” Why should anyone expect her to care for the average American?
